Straight Talk about Safety and Quality in Children’s Furniture | 10 min. Read

Shopping for baby furniture is different than shopping for a new patio set. Sure you want that picture perfect, Instagram perfect crib, but more importantly, you want something that comes with peace of mind and keeps your family safe. Your kids grow quickly, you'll blink twice and they're ready for their first car. And yes, you can get a car without airbags or spare tire, you can even hide that funky smell but do you really go that route? Hopefully not.

In Europe they say "we're too poor to buy cheap stuff"... just think about it for a second.

If you poke below the surface, you realize that this makes a lot of sense. Investing in quality means investing in yourself, it'll also save you time, money and provide for a much better experience. It's the same mindset we Silva springs from and we want to save parents from being haunted by the "should have" and "would have" parenting ghosts. We know it might be your 1st time on this parenting journey too, so continue reading below and maybe it'll be the best 10 minutes of your day.

Some of these barely certified cribs comes with inherent risks, short term usability, invisible foes and lots of question marks. The naked truth about children’s furniture, more specifically, cribs: nearly a million and a half cribs have been recalled from the US market in the past 20 years alone, all because they posed an unreasonable risk of injury to children. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the federal agency tasked with monitoring the potential risk of harm caused by consumer goods, rewrote the safety guidelines for cribs 5 times in the past 10 years and cautioned parents about purchasing any cribs built before that date. Sadly, the new regulations have not prevented product peddlers from swamping the market with substandard and "somewhat" compliant cribs. But you'll have a child for the rest of your life, not only for 2 years so is good enough really good enough?

Silva Furniture—We Built Our Business on Safety, Health and Value

At Silva, your child’s safety and well-being is at the heart of everything we do:

  • Our furniture is handcrafted, not assembled, from wholly sustainable sources in Europe. We ensure that our wood suppliers comply with all the terms of European Treaty for Forest Conservation.
  • All our cribs are fashioned from solid beechwood, a Northern hemisphere hardwood that provides the durability of oak or maple with superior workability, finishing and mechanical properties. In addition, because of the sheer weight and density of beechwood, your child won’t be able to tip over one of our convertible cribs.
  • Our dressers are engineered so that all exposed parts are solid wood, giving them maximum protection against changes in humidity and temperature. Every dresser included a wall-anchoring kit, so that a dresser will never fall over on your child. The soft-closing German hardware helps keep little fingers (and big fingers, too) from getting pinched, and also offers durability and value—independent tests have found that the hardware has an expected life of more than 70 years!
  • The English dovetail joints used on all our dresser drawers offer more than simple elegance—they have been scientifically proven to be one of the strongest and most reliable types of joinery, ensuring longevity, as well as the safety of your child
  • All dressers have solid wood corner brackets, helping maintain the structural integrity of our furniture, so that it provides long-term value with minimal risk of injury
  • We use only water-based and vegetable-based finishes on our furniture, so your child won’t be exposed to any volatile organic compounds, such as lead, formaldehyde or other toxins

We have designed our cribs, beds and dressers to exceed the safety recommendations established by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The slats on our cribs comply with CPSC guidelines, so that children won’t fall out or get their heads caught. Our products don’t have sharp edges or small parts, either, so that children won’t get cuts and won’t swallow things that can cause them harm
