December 14 | 8 minutes read | Crib Safety, What to look for
What do newborns and koalas have in common? Both sleep roughly 16-20hrs a day! Luckily sweet babies snooze comfortably in their beautiful nurseries and not atop eucalyptus trees.
With so many options to choose from, it is important to dig a little deeper when it comes to choosing a safe, quality crib for your little nugget. After all, the crib will be the one piece of furniture that grows with your baby for years and years!
Whether you just recently found out that you are expecting or are nearing your due date - we bet you are giving lots of thought to the nursery furniture! We have compiled a list of three most important features to consider when buying the crib:
1.Meets Safety Standards
A non-negotiable is that the crib you select should meet the safety standards of organizations like the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Keep a close eye on safety recalls and make sure to pick a brand that has not made any “black” lists recently.
All Silva cribs are certified by the CPSC and have been trusted by new parents for many years.
2.Structurally safe.
We could preach about the importance of crib safety until the cows come home, and we often do. The place where your baby sleeps and spends so much of his time must be just as safe as a car seat. Have you spent countless hours doing car seat research? We bet you have.
Silva cribs are made from European quality beechwood. They are heavy, sturdy and reliable. The sturdier the elements, the safer the crib will be. The more solid the wood is the less likely for the inserts or bolts to pull out and lead to accidents. The heavier the crib is the safer it will be.
3.Longevity and versatility.
Babies grow like weeds. It is true what they say about blinking. Your little one will be a newborn and then you accidentally blink and it’s time to forward-face their car seat! Eeek!
Opt for a crib that can be used until your baby transitions to a toddler bed, and the standard size crib mattress can be used for the transition.
All Silva cribs are convertible and have a conversion pack add on, so instead of growing out of their bed, they'll actually be growing into it!
Some things to remember once your crib is already lovingly placed in the center of your nursery:
- A crib mattress should be firm and tight-fitting within the crib and should not sag under your baby’s weight. You can test if the mattress is tight enough by inserting two fingers between the crib and the mattress. If the space is greater than two fingers, you’ll need a different mattress.
- You should periodically lower the mattress as your child gets taller to ensure they are securely in their crib at night, without risk of climbing or falling out.
- Any sheet used on the crib mattress needs to be a fitted crib sheet.
- Your little one does not need a soft mattress, in fact, the safest option is for your baby to sleep on a firm surface.
Choose Silva cribs for your precious cargo and you will be choosing peace of mind, sleek style and investing into a crib that will grow with your joy!
